After a steady hour's drive in Roy " Crasher " Reidys' courtesy car (BMW nonetheless) we arrived at Cantilever Park to find the world's smallest car park was full and luckily managed to find a spot just outside on a side road.
We frequented - well it would have been rude not to - the compact clubhouse outside the ground and were met with a friendly welcome and plastic glasses!! As the rest of the Town fans began to arrive it became apparent that most had visited the highly recommended chippy just down the road and by the time we tried to enter the ground the queue was to the edge of the car park leading up to the only turnstile open which was manned by their centre forwards Aunty Ethel. Thankfully common sense prevailed and another dimly lit turnstile was opened to speed up the entrance process; though some Town supporters missed the first five minutes or so.
Having paid £7.00 admission and a further £1.50 for a very commendable programme we surveyed the ground. Behind one goal was a small covered terracing whilst the other goal just had an open grass area to stand on.
A covered seating area was down one touchline whist the opposite to that had the changing rooms, clubhouse and another small covered seating area which was below pitch level and afforded restricted viewing particularly as part of the record crowd for the stadium of 505 were stood on front of it!!
The food on offer was basic - pies but no peas or gravy!! - and seemed expensive for what was on offer but at least they did not run out and service was good and the 400+ Shaymen fans went home happy not only with the food but with the result; only tempered by the fact that Lancaster had won and that we heard that Harry Winter had been recalled by his parent club.
