Creating A Community Stadium
Councillors have given the go-ahead to a scheme which will create a community stadium for the people of Calderdale.
At a meeting on Monday, November 19, Calderdale Council's Cabinet approved a joint funded project by the Council and the Shay Stadium to complete the east stand.
Councillors had already agreed to fund a minimum scheme to provide facilities for players and spectators which addressed the requirements of the governing bodies for football and rugby league. However, Cabinet has now agreed that the stand will be completed with additional community facilities which will be funded by the Shay Stadium Trust.
It is proposed conference and banqueting facilities are incorporated within the stand to improve the economic sustainability of the stadium. There is also the potential to include space for educational and health and fitness projects. Other design proposals include a pitch side terrace, café bar and supporters' bar.
Councillor David Kirton, portfolio holder for Regeneration and Development, said: "Calderdale Council is working with the Shay Stadium Trust to create a community stadium that the people of Calderdale can be proud of.
"By agreeing to include community facilities within the East Stand, Calderdale will have a sports stadium which benefits the wider community.
"It is our aim to create a facility which can be used by people seven days a week rather than a venue which is currently used for half a day a week.
"By developing community facilities at the site the Council would be supporting children and young people throughout the borough and helping to promote a healthier lifestyle."
Roger Simpson, Chair of the Shay Stadium Trust said he was delighted positive and real progress wan now being made.
"I am particularly reassured by the Council's agreement to include the community facilities in the reconfigured East Stand which we have always said is a necessity. This will enable the Shay Stadium Trust to have other sources of income to give the possibility of a financially viable future for the Shay as well as ensuring regular use.
"We have consistently assured the Council that we are happy to work in partnership with them to achieve our objective which now has the prospect of becoming a reality."
Finishing touches are being put to the design proposals for the East Stand and a planning application is due to be submitted next month. Fans will be able to see the designs first hand on December 2 at a special open day event arranged by Calderdale Council and The Shay Stadium Trust. The designs will be on display in the Weaver's at The Shay from 12pm to 4pm. Representatives from Calderdale Council and the Shay Stadium Trust will be on hand to explain the proposals to fans. All are welcome to attend.
