Halifax Town have beaten Evesham United 2-1 tonight to book their place in the 1st Round of the FA Cup.
It wasn't the convincing victory that many fans may have expected against our lower division opponents but a win was the minimum required tonight to secure a place in the next round.
The visitors took a shock early lead with a goal within four minutes. Town centre half Adam Quinn slipped which gave James Knott a chance and he lifted the ball over the advancing Adam Legzdins to put them ahead.
Evesham had a couple of opportunities from a free kick which was a header go wide, then a move down the left saw a cross go across Legzdins goal and out for a free kick.
Town could have equalised on 12 minutes, Torpey found Tom Kearney who played a lovely 1-2 with Jon Shaw and his shot was deflected onto the bar and out for a corner.
However, Chris Wilder's side didn't have long to wait for the equaliser. Doughty and Torpey combined down the left, the winger played a lovely cross onto the head of Shaw who made no mistake from close range and landed his header in the bottom left hand corner of the net.
Doughty's and Bushell combined to play Simon Heslop up and his forward run saw him unleash a 20 yard shot which Evesham goalkeeper Nathan Vaughan took at the second opportunity as Shaw looked to pounce for the rebound.
Town continued to look for a second goal with Doughty and Torpey looking good down the left hand side. Quinn headed over from a free kick, Kearney didn't connect properly from 20 yards and his shot was easy for Vaughan.
Greg Young started to get forward and he played in a couple of crosses and then had a shot saved well by Vaughan after a 25 yard powerful shot.
Then Town got what proved to the winning goal and what an effort it turned out to. Greg Young played the ball into the box and it was cleared only as far as on loan midfielder Simon Heslop, the youngster steadied himself and unleashed a 35 yard screamer into the top corner, leaving Vaughan absolutely no chance.
Despite dominating possession, Town didn't create another chance before the break but were looking comfortable for the win.
Doughty and Torpey combined on the left within a minute of the restart but the ball in didn't find a striker and was cleared for a corner.
Evesham went on the counterattack on 52 minutes which needed a strong last minute tackle from Adam Quinn to deny a goal scoring opportunity, the ball was played back to the edge of the penalty area and the shot was over the bar.
Michael Branch made his home debut on 65 minutes replacing Lewis Killeen and he created a chance for Taylor within four minutes of coming on. He played a 1-2 with Taylor, whose shot was hit into the ground and was easy for Vaughan.
Town should have been 3-1 up with 72 minutes played. Branch was fouled 30 yards out. A training ground move found Shaw at the far post on side but he could only direct his header into the side netting.
Evesham caught Town on the break with 10 minutes remaining after substitute Ryan Toulson was caught out of position but the shot was straight at Legzdins.
Shaw had a couple of chances later on but saw efforts go over the bar and Branch tried to chip the goalkeeper but didn't get enough on it.
The Shaymen will face Burton Albion in the next round of the Cup on Saturday 10th November and will face Crawley Town in the league at home on Saturday.
