FC Halifax Town manager Neil Aspin was encouraged by what he saw during the club's 5-0 win over Brighouse Town in their first pre-season friendly of the new campaign.

"It was a good result, a reasonable performance but we've only been back for just over a week and we've only had four or five sessions so it's early days, but it's an encouraging start."

Aspin was also happy with the manner of the victory, in which a number of new signings made their debuts.

He said: "It's important that, for me as manager, I've put a team out that plays a certain way. It's important that we use the whole squad and everybody gets games and we'll probably have to do that for the first three or four pre-season games."

Aspin had praise for debutant Scott Metcalfe, who put in an eye-catching performance on the left-wing.

He said: "Scott was somebody that we tried to sign last year after seeing him play for Trafford and we liked the look of him. They wouldn't let us have him, but we waited and then got him at the end of the season, and he showed today why we waited so long to sign him."
