Vince - We Can Still Improve
FC Halifax Town have beaten Salford City 7-1 at the Shay which left the majority of a 1021 crowd delighted.
Town boss Jim Vince said after the game, "We are trying to build and it's about taking steps forward every game. There is a desire and a hunger within the squad which you can see. I have brought three or four players in this week and it's keeping the lads on their toes. They have to play well to stay in the side and I guess that's where we are.
We had the team that start preseason, the team that started the season and now the team at 6 to 7 weeks of the season and now we have healthy squad. The players are getting better; we are looking more of a team now.
If you set off with that tempo and that was the message today to play at that level. We scored two goals within the first five minutes and it gives you a good foundation to build on.
We have done well in the first half again but with the heat and fatigue out there in the second half we have dropped the level a little bit and I was a little disappointed with that aspect. However I know the areas where there are a couple of things that are a little but amiss and we have plans in place to address that.
It's been a good week with three wins but I have to say that I am cheesed off that they have scored a goal. I don't like that and we shouldn't concede goals like it. I will watch the video, I don't like giving away sloppy goals and Jon Kennedy hasn't had to make a save today. It took the shine off a little. That sloppiness could cost us at the end of season and that's happen to me before. You learn by experiences, we have beaten Salford today and I think most would have expected us to do so. However I think we can give a little bit more.
I am glad Nigel Jemson scored at the end as some people could have gone home and said that we didn't try for 20 minutes in the second half, but they did.
Ashley has now got five goals for us but his first today was his best effort so far. He's had a telling off for not getting his hat trick today. He passed in the 18 yard box instead of shooting and he should be finishing. He shouldn't be coming away saying he's scored two goals and played well when he should have had the hat trick.
When a game is tight, he needs to take responsibility and he's passed it to a team mate to do which he shouldn't have done.
There were some good performances by the players today, we can improve and we have given good value for money today and will go away and tell their friends, who will hopefully come down to support us.
Paul Gedman has come in and scored some goals for us. However I think the quality going into our box has been a lot better. He's scoring goals, they aren't spectacular but he's scoring them but he gives us a presence.
I think the first 45 minutes on Tuesday night was similar to the first half today but the difference is we've had an end product. We were tough and ruthless."
Danny Ellis and Scott Phelan will have to try extremely hard to get into the side but that's what we expect of all the players now. I have made a statement to all the fringe players that they have to play extremely well to get into the team. "
