OUFC Match :- Wilder's View
Halifax Town manager Chris Wilder was a very unhappy man after two hours in the dressing room with all his players this evening.
He said, "I feel massively let down by my players and they should feel that they have let everyone down. The supporters have every right to vent their frustration at me and the players. I have to take that on the chin and so do the players.
I thought we were excellent for 30 minutes this afternoon.I have spoke to Jim Smith, who said that we should have been 3-0 up after half an hour.
Our goalkeeper has made a rash decision and it's an individual mistake. They score from the penalty and then after that it's like someone's popped a balloon. We never looked like we were going to get back into the game.
The players didn't do the basics, didn't tackle, run, win headers, pass the ball, and didn't control it and a few of them crumbled out there. That's not a nice thing for a manager to say about some of his players. It's opened my eyes; I'm hoping this is a one off result.
When we have been beaten this season it has been to a lack of quality, not character or mental toughness. I thought we were very weak in the second half out there. It affected a lot of players and it spread through the team. The confidence drained out of them which is alarming from the first half were we were excellent to the second half when it was totally unacceptable.
The players need to know where I am coming from; they've let everyone down today. I have shielded the players but there is no hiding place out there for me or the players. It wasn't good enough, I'll take the responsibility and they have now got to prove to me it was a one off defeat. There's not been many times where we have lost 2, 3, 4 games on the spin, we need to show a reaction on Monday.
I didn't think we were helped with Jon Shaw going off, I thought there were bits and pieces went against us on the day but you're not going to have a day where it all goes for you. We were for a little bit of character when we went 1-0 down and for them to roll their sleeves up and I didn't think we had enough of that.
There was no way we were going to get back into the game, I apologise to the supporters, and they didn't deserve a performance or result like that. There are no excuses for what's gone on off the pitch and the players have got to perform better than that. If they do, we'll hopefully look back to this game as a distant memory and if they don't I will have to look at the players that will be here next season.
We can't expect to win every game, but it's the manner of the defeat which has really upset me. It hurts like hell."
