Wakefield FC: Report
A goal 3 minutes from time denied FC Halifax Town a deserved win at Wakefield this afternoon with both sides taking a point from a 1 v 1 draw.
Few amongst the 600+ crowd would deny the Shaymen were worthy of a win following a game in which they dominated possession, created chances but found a resolute home defence and a goalkeeper, Jan Zolna, in fine form. And, they hit the woodwork on a number of occasions too.
Town started brightly and pushed forward at will, winning a number of corners which were cleared.Nicky Gray shot wide then Scott Phelan's 30 yarder cannoned to safety off the crossbar with Zolna beaten.Tom Baker curled a free kick over the ball but the keeper saved with ease.
Free kicks on either side off the field failed to create anything and the one way traffic continued with Jonathan Hedge a mere spectator. His opposite number Zolna denied Dean with a parried save after good work on the left by Danny Lowe but the Wakefield defence were alert to clear the rebound.
The crossbar denied Gray the opener just before the interval when a cross found him in plenty of space but his rising shot clipped the woodwork.Lowe almost got on the end of a cross from the right but his goal bound header hit James Dean and the first half dominance ended with a blank scoreline.
The second period commenced with a mirror image of a first half incident when Scott Phelan picked up a loose ball and hammered a shot towards goal. The crossbar again came to Wakefield's rescue with the Town midfielder cursing his luck.
Wes Milnes had the home sides first effort with Hedge denying him with a low save and another Hedge save denied the same player minutes later.
A goal finally arrived and it was no surprise that it came from top scorer James Dean with his 31st goal of the season. He picked up the ball on the Town left, beat his man before cutting infield to beat Zolna at his near post with a low shot. The Shaymen had a deserved lead and tried to extend it with a defender clearing when Gray looked destined to score from a Dean cross.
Zolna denied Dean again before James Riley replaced Richard Marshall with Neil Aspin reverting to a wing back formation. The Town attacks continued with Zolna denying Gray by turning his low shot away for a corner.
Town needlessly conceded a corner on their left that was initially cleared but from the 2nd cross Wes Milnes headed into an empty net to cruelly deny the Shaymen the 3 points their performance merited. The did continue to press forward with Riley heading a corner over and Zolna gathering at the 2nd attempt after making a complete hash of gathering Dean's header under his own crossbar.
So, the Shaymen have to settle for a point on their travels for the 2nd away game in a row where a late equaliser has denied them all 3 points.
