Boston United: Report
Boston United 5-2 FC Halifax Town
By Katie Vass at York Street, Boston.
Tuesday 9th February 2010
A miserable night for Town as the Shaymen were knocked out of the Unibond League Challenge Cup, losing the quarter-final tie 5-2 to Boston United at York Street.
With Scott Phelan as captain the team would have looked for a win tonight but unfortunately it just didn't happen. The first Boston goal came in the 12th minute, scored by Marc Newsham and from then on it looked like a Boston win was inevitable. The Pilgrims missed out on a second goal when it was flagged for offside five minutes later. With Town's chances going begging, further goals came in the 25th and 36thminute to give Boston United a 3-0 lead at half time and Marc Newsham a hat trick. It looked as if United were sealing a comfortable win.
Changes at half time for Halifax saw Harry Winter and James Dean come on to try and liven up the Shaymen's chances, and in the 71st minute Dean were rewarded with his 32nd goal of the season. But disaster struck again in the 77th minute when Spencer Weir Daley scored Boston's fourth goal of the night. Three minutes later and Danny Davidson put the fifth goal past Jonathan Hedge.
Town's travelling 39 fans witnessed action up to the final minute when a consolation own goal was scored in the 90th minute, before Boston put the ball into the back of the net only for it to be disallowed for the second time in the game.
With Town out of the Unibond League Challenge Cup, their next game is at home to Harrogate Railway where they will look to move past tonight's defeat with only the league to concentrate on right now.
