Woodley Sports Vs FC Halifax Town - Report
FC Halifax Town sit proudly on top of the Unibond League Division North tonight after extending their unbeaten run to 9 games with a 3 v 2 win away to Woodley Sports. There were scares along the way with Woodley taking an early lead but once the Shaymen adapted to the difficult conditions posed by the howling gale and synthetic surface they controlled the first half and held out on the second when the hosts threatened.
As expected there was only one change to Tuesday's starting line up with Damien Allen's hamstring injury keeping on the sidelines so Jonny Smith started the game. And, the game started badly for Jim Vince's team when Danny Queeley netted from 20 yards.Former Shaymen Adam Morning also went close as Woodley enjoyed a fine start to the game.Another Morning free kick, assisted by the increasing wind, flew narrowly wide with Town struggling to get a foothold in the game.
The first opportunity for Town came in the 15th minute when Paul Gedman's flick released Cavell Coo on the right and he surged into the box but could only find the side netting.Morning and Queeley both had shots blocked by a Town defence who were getting to grips with the surface by now.
Junior Brown trickery on the left worked a shooting opportunity on the left but he blazed his effort over the bar then the equaliser arrived in the 25th minute.Jonny Smith raced into the penalty area on the right but the defender looked odds on to shepherd the ball out for a goal kick but tenacious work by Smith saw him hook the ball back for Ashley Stott to score from 12 yards.
Just seven minutes later and Town had the lead.Smith linked with Coo on the right and the wing back was impeded as he looked to beat his man.Stott took the spot kick and sent Ben Connett the wrong way for his second of the afternoon.
Stott headed a Smith free kick wide as he searched for his hat-trick but Town didn't have long to wait for their third goal when Smith got into the penalty area on the left and his low cross was slicked past his own keeper by a Woodley defender and Town held a 3 v 1 advantage at the interval.
Tom Baker had the first chance of the second half but Connett saved at his near post then Paul Gedman went close with a volley from a corner. The wind was in Town's advantage but its strength was such that balls forward frequently ran out of play for goal kicks.
Woodley gave themselves a 63rd minute lifeline when Gavin Salmon scored after a period of pressure. He turned Danny Meadowcroft inside out before beating Kennedy at his near post.Queeley was inches wide of scoring an equaliser when he got on the end of a right wing cross and Salmon volleyed over from 20 yards.
Danny Ellis replaced Stott and Kris King came on for Smith a Jim Vince freshened up his side.A late red card for Woodley's Daniel Pringle for abusive language to the Referee's Assistant saw the home side reduced to 10 men although this didn't stop them having the last chance of the game when Morning cut in from the right but sliced his shot wide.
Town now sit on of the League after a run of 25 points from the last 27.Can they extend the winning run at home to Chorley in a week's time? Why not come on down and support the lads.
