FC Halifax Town Vs Skelmersdale United - Report
FC Halifax Town extended their unbeaten run in the Unibond League to 4 games with an emphatic 3 v 0 victory over Skelmersdale United at the Shay. And the win was every bit as convincing as the score line suggests with 2nd half goals from Junior Brown, Cavell Coo and substitute Ashley Stottsecuring the 3 points.
The pre match for Jim Vince was problematic with keeper Jon Kennedy absent with food poisoning. This meant a recall for Phil Senior who has been suffering from a stomach muscle injury in recent weeks but he damaged his groin in the pre match warm up which resulted in an FC Halifax Town debut for youngster Crain Ellison.Elsewhere Junior Brown replaced Kris King in the left wing back role which gave Jonny Smith a midfield position and up front Paul Gedman made a surprise return from a thigh injury.
The Shaymen started the game brightly with Junior Brown shooting narrowly wide in the 4th minute and Jonny Smith was off target with a volley 8 minutes later.George Donnelly was a threat on the counter attack for the visitors but he found stubborn resistance from Lincoln Adams and Danny Meadowcroft who were supported by Nigel Jemson in a 3 man defence.
A fine move involving Scott Phelan and Cavell Coo looked to have produced a goal but Skelmersdale keeper Ryan McMahon pulled off a reflex save to deny Gedman's far post header.
Lincoln Adams was alert to block an Adam Wade shot at the other end then Sean McConville raced away on the right and his pass found Donnelly but Ellison was equal to the strikers low shot.
Colin Daniel, who had been quiet until this point, raced away down the right and won a corner. From Brown's cross Gedman headed across goal but Smith couldn't get enough power into another header to beat McMahon.A Daniel cross resulted in Gedman setting up Damian Allen but his 25 yard shot was off target.Another Daniel cross was flicked towards goal by Brown but McMahon saved again.
The Shaymen were on top but a goal would not come.Jemson shot straight at the keeper from a free kick, Brown shot over and Gedman volleyed over from 3 yards out after Daniel beat his man again.
The second period continued in the same vein with attack after attack from Jim Vince's men.Junior Brown shot wide from 20 yards and Jonny Smith had a penalty appeal waved away.
Patience was the virtue of the day and it paid off with a 58th minute opener from Junior Brown.Daniel got away from his marker on the left and crossed for the former Crewe man, racing forward from his wing back role, and he headed his second goal in 5 days to give FC Halifax Town the lead.
Four minutes later and Town got their 2nd.Scott Phelan found Damian Allen on the left and his cross was met by the unmarked Cavell on the far post and his stooping header doubled the advantage.Another wing back had scored as if to emphasise the attacking policy of the team.
Donnelly raced away from Jemson but shot wide of Ellison's post and such was Town's dominance Jim Vince was able to substitute influential performers Scott Phelan, Paul Gedman and Junior Brown with Peter Moore, Danny Ellis and Ashley Stott.
Peter Moore almost capitalised on good play between Allen and Coo but his shot found the side netting then Stott shot straight at McMahon from 30 yards out.
In injury time Ashley Stott added a deserved 3rd goal for his side when he latched onto a pass behind the Skelmersdale defence, rounded Mcmahin and had all the time in the world to pick his spot which he duly did to round off a fine afternoon for FC Halifax Town with a resounding 3 v 0 over a much fancied Skelmersdale side.
Town now return to cup action when Curzon Ashton visits the Shay next Saturday.
