FC Halifax Town Vs Wakefield FC - Match Report
A goal in each half from Ashley Stott enabled FC Halifax Town to turn a one goal deficit into a 2 v 1 victory over Wakefield FC at the Shay in tonight's Unibond Cup encounter.
On the down side Skipper Tony Barras left the field in the first half with a dislocated shoulder and he now joins Steve Payne, Phil Senior, Ross Clegg, Neil Ross and Junior Brown on the treatment table. His injury forced a reshuffle with left back Crain Smith having to partner Lincoln Adams in an unfamiliar centre half role.
The Shaymen had the early pressure with Stott shooting over the bar in the first minute and Danny Ellis also having a shot after a fine turn. But, it was the visitors who looked the more likely side to break the deadlock as the half progressed.
Barras left the field on 25 minutes at the same time Wakefield took the lead with a 20 yard screamer from Jay Sobers that gave Jon Kennedy no chance. The woodwork rescued Town on two occasions when the defence failed to deal with an Aidan Morris corner.
Town equalised when Danny Davidson flicked the ball into Stott's path and although the Striker was clearly held back by his marker he kept his composure to beat Andy Woods with a low shot.Adam Morning forced a fine save from Woods 3 minutes later when he dribbled infield from the corner flag but the keeper saved his shot low to his left.
As half time approached both sides went close.Firstly, Chris Howarth skipped past Lincoln Adams but his shot across goal shaved the post on the way out for a goal kick then Jonny Smith made Woods dive full length to save his 25 yarder.
There were very few chances at the start of the second half.Jonny Smith picked up a caution for a midfield challenge then Ellis scuffed a shot.An Adam Morning run and cross was met by Danny Davidson at the far post but he couldn't direct the ball towards goal.
A number of substitutions disrupted the flow of the game with Peter Moore replacing Davidson which forced a change up front with Ellis joining Stott. And this combination helped to win the game for The Shaymen in the 77th minute.Moore latched onto a pass on the left and found Ellis on the edge of the penalty area.Ellis beat his man and Stott netted at the far post from a low cross.
Jonny Smith was inches off target from 30 yards in the last minute as Jim Vince's men held firm to record a deserved victory.
