Nantwich Town Vs FC Halifax Town - Report
FC Halifax Town's interest in this season's FA Cup is over after a 4 v 1 defeat away to Nantwich Town in the 2nd qualifying round.
The Shaymen took a 10th minute lead, but were pegged back 5 minutes later, and looked the better side for large periods of the first half. After the break they failed to recover their momentum and their style of play was hampered by an injury to the impressive Paul Gedman who left the field with a thigh strain 7 minutes before the interval.
Peter Moore had the first shot of the game but his low shot was straight at Lee Jones then Jon Kennedy made a smart save low to his right to deny Adam Beasley.
Town took the lead with a delightful goal in the 10th minute.Jonny Smith played the ball to Gedman and his header found Moore in acres of space. The midfielder raced towards the penalty area and his low finish was clinical, giving Jones no chance.
Wing back Cavell Coo had a chance to double the lead when Smith won the ball on the left and crossed to the far post where Coo met the ball on the volley under a challenge but couldn't hit the target.
The Dabbers equalised in the 15th minute when a passing move found Alan Naggington in far too much space and he beat Kennedy with a low shot. The Town keeper then saved well to deny Dave Walker.Lincoln Adams received a yellow card for a foul then Dave Tickle's cross narrowly evaded Walker.
Nigel Jemson replaced Gedman and had a chance from Kris King's cross but his header failed to trouble Jones and the half ended all square at 1 v 1.
The Shaymen found themselves under pressure at the start of the second period but held firm with resolute defending from Steve Payne and Tony Barras.
Payne headed a Smith corner over the bar then Nantwich took the lead from a corner of their own when Glyn Blackhurst headed home from 6 yards out.A free kick on the Town right provided an opportunity and Payne rose at the far post, beat keeper Jones, but his header was an inch over the crossbar.
Town fell further behind in the 66th minute when Adams fouled Michael Lennon inside the penalty area and Referee Newman immediately pointed to the spot.Up stepped Walker to send Kennedy the wrong way and The Dabbers head a 3 v 1 lead.Walker then shot wide and did Naggington who rounded Kennedy but found the side netting.
A disappointing afternoon for FC Halifax Town was confirmed late on when Walker got on the end of a long punt from Jones and flicked the ball past Kennedy to seal the Clubs FA Cup exit.Jim Vince and his men now turn their attentions to Tuesday's Unibond Cup gate against Wakefield FC at the Shay, kick off 7.45pm.
