FC Halifax Town Vs Warrington Town - Report
After Saturday's Cup win Town were back in League action and looking to push on up the table with a win and a further home match this coming Saturday.
Jim Vince named Tony Barras in the starting line up but also kept Lincoln Adams in and along with Steve Payne formed a solid looking defence. Cavell Coo and Kris King pushed up, when possible, to from a 5 man midfield with Walker, Smith and Moore. Gedman and Stott started up front.
Despite the constant rain throughout Town coped better with the conditions and soon got into a smooth passing game with Coo involved in several forages down the right hand side. It was just 10 mins into the game when a misplaced back pass allowed Paul Gedman to run in on goal unmarked and then execute a
glorious chip over the advancing keeper to give Town an early lead.
Town pressed on for a 2nd and on 22 mins with a slick interchange of passes between Walker and Gedman which saw Warrington scramble the ball away for a corner. Gedman was 1st to the resulting corner kick but headed over. Just 2 mins later a run and cross by Coo was headed out for another corner and this time it was Adams who met the kick 1st only to see Holme head the goal bound effort over the bar. Coo was reveling in the time and space he was getting down the right and another deep cross had to be put out for a corner by McCarthey.
It was 30 mins into the 1st half before Warrington managed to cause any concern to the Town defence and after a corner kick was headed away by Barras, it fell to Hadland on the edge of the box, but his fierce shot
flashed past the upright.
After 40 mins it was Coo again looking to attack, he rounded the Warrington left back, Toone, and hit a low drive across the penalty box and again it was scrambled to safety.
Town kept up the pressure and on 44 mins Smith pushed forward and his shot was spilled by Mottram but with Town attacker pressing he gathered at 2nd attempt.
Just before half time Stott put Coo through and again he went past the full back but the angle was too tight and he shot against the side netting. 45 mins were up with FC Halifax Town totally dominating proceedings. Coo was rampant down the right, Gedman leading the line well, Stott causing problems with his unselfish running and with Kennedy and the defence untroubled it looked only a matter of time before the goals would come.
However, at the start of the 2nd half Warrington had other ideas, and started to take the initiative in search of an equalizer. Skipper Towey pressed his side forward and the visitors were beginning to enjoy more of the possession with Town hitting on the break.
A corner to Warrington saw Adams having to head over for safety and soon after a free kick just outside the area brought Kennedy into action. Defences were dominant throughout the 2nd half and there was little goalmouth action following the visitor's early efforts. Indeed, it looked a dour 2nd half until Adam Morning was introduced on 70 mins and his willingness to run at defenders gave hope for a 2nd goal but nothing transpired.
A welcome 3 points for Town, and if they can sustain tonight's 1st half performance over longer periods in matches then it's only a matter of time before the goals come.
Wakey Herald.
