Smeltz Brings Smiles To Fans

Posted on: Sun 20 Jun 2010

What a day the 20th June 2010 was!

England may be struggling in the World Cup so far but for New Zealand it has been an amazing day and their result will have put a smile on many football fans faces around the world holding the World Champions to a draw.

However for FC Halifax Town fans we have another reason to celebrate. One of our former strikers, albeight for the old football Club was the hero for the All-Whites.

Whether you were watching the game at home in the UK or in a bar on the beautiful island of Tenerife where I had the privilege to watch Shane Smeltz tap home it simply doesn´t matter. The small matter that he was in an offside position when he stroked the ball home was irrelevant as the officials missed this and gave the goal to shock the European Giants of Italy.

The big European teams are struggling so far with France in disarray, Italy in the same position as England and Germany losing on Friday afternoon, this has the opportunity to be the most open World Cup ever.

Who would have thought when they saw Shane play for The Shaymen under Chris Wilder that he would go on to be a  World Cup hero? He struggled in front of goal for Town and he will no doubt be a hero in his own Country. What a turnaround and shows what a great sport that we all support.

When the underdogs grab a result, it brings a smile to the face. Now for England on Wednesday......
