Blast From The Past
Gregg Abbott started his career at hometown club Coventry where he signed professional terms in 1982. He failed to make a single appearance at Highfield Road however and moved on to Bradford City in September 1982.
It was at Valley Parade where Abbott made his name, making 343 appearances over nine years, scoring 48 goals. In his first two seasons the club ambled around the middle of the Third Division, but then stormed to the title in 1984-85, where they gained 94 points, winning promotion by 11 points. Abbott then helped the Bantams to a credible 11th place in the Second Division. Abbott was a losing Play-Off Semi-Finalist in 1987-88, going down 3-2 on aggregate to eventual winners Middlesbrough. He was relegated just two years later however, having gone the entire season without an away win. He helped Bradford to within three points of a play-off place in 1990-1991, but his time at Valley Parade was coming to an end and, in the summer of 1991, Fourth Division Halifax paid £25,000 for his services.
Abbott spent one season at the Shay, in which Town finished 20th, scoring once.
Abbott then moved onto non-league Guiseley for three months, but never appeared and he then enjoyed the end of his career with Hull City.
Hull, then of the Third Division, proved to be a rejuvenating time for Abbott as he made 141 appearances for the Tigers, scoring 18 goals and played until nearly his 36th birthday.
In his first season he helped Hull avoid relegation to the Fourth Division, as they finished one place and three points above the drop zone, but in his final season- 1995-1996, they finished bottom of the league, and as Hull contemplated life in the bottom tier of English football for the first time in 12 years, Abbott decided to hang up his boots.
Greg Abbott is now manager of League One side Carlisle United.
