Former Lincoln City, Carlisle United and Halifax Town fullback Kevin Sandwith has been challenged by Chester manager Bobby Williamson to retain his first team place at the Deva Stadium.

The 29-year-old, who made 64 league appearances for the Shaymen, had been told he could leave Chester but was recalled at the weekend for their 1-0 defeat at Notts County.

Williamson told the Chester Chronicle: "I spoke to him before the window opened.

"We had a discussion and felt it would be best if he was on the list so he could maybe get first-team football elsewhere, but the guy's a good pro.

"He's worked hard and has deserved a place in the team and he got it. Hopefully he can go on and earn himself a contract."

Sandwith left the Shaymen for Sincil Bank in 2004.
