The organisation that is known as Shaymen Down South (SDS) has been in existence since October 1993 when a chance meeting between two southern based Town fans on the platform of a London Underground station started the ball rolling. Originally, the SDS focussed on Town fans living in and around London and the South East but over the years the membership base has expanded and, as well as including members from across the globe, over 30% of members now come from Halifax and its immediate environs.
Over the years the SDS has taken on many roles and challenges but a constant focus has been to provide an independent voice that, whilst perhaps not always agreeing with the hierarchy at the time, is always seeking to act and do what it believes to be the best for Halifax Town. The SDS publication, which for many issues was promoted as the SDS fanzine, has been immensely popular and successful with sales regularly exceeding 300 per issue at its peak. The SDS publication is still going in the form of a regular Newsletter for members and continues to be the most detailed independent publication on all things to do with Halifax Town.
SDS fundraising has taken on many guises over the years but a constant for at least the last ten years has been the SDS Goal-O-Meter. At its peak it was raising over £50 per goal. More recently, the Goal-O-Meter has been brought back ‘in house’ as a specific fund raiser to allow SDS members the opportunity to support the club financially.
As well as informing and fund raising there is also an important social side to the SDS. The ‘Beer Trail’ has been the starting point of many friendships over the years and the knowledge that there is a pre-match meeting place where Town fans can be found has greatly enhanced the enjoyment of the ‘SDS Day Out’.
SDS membership for the 2012 / 2013 season is again £8 for adults and £10 for a family or group membership. Membership includes all editions of the SDS Newsletter and at least one opportunity to attend an SDS sponsored match. Social events and meetings are organised throughout the season and members can use the SDS to channel any questions or concerns they may have about FC Halifax Town to the relevant people in the club hierarchy.
