Nuneaton: Report

Matty Kosylo put in a man of the match performance as The Shaymen marched on to six games unbeaten.

Matty Kosylo was the star of the show as FC Halifax Town ran out comfortable 2-0 winners over Nuneaton Town. The flying winger had a hand in both goals, combining well with Kevin Roberts to set up Adam Morgan, then winning and scoring a penalty to seal all three points for the home side.

The Shaymen faithful were left purring after Kosylo put in a performance of the highest quality, terrorising the Boro defence with a plethora of tricks and flicks. It has become something to be expected from the former Nantwich Town man, who has been in inspired form throughout all of 2017.

It only took Billy Heath’s men 16 minutes to take the lead. An onslaught of Halifax attacks saw Kosylo skin one man with a piece of skill and cut the ball back for the ever-dangerous Kevin Roberts. The right-back’s cross was met on the volley by Morgan who expertly picked out the top corner.

Again, it was the man on everyone’s lips who doubled the lead. Kosylo started the second half just as he ended the first, racing past Alex Penny into the box and committing the defender into the foul. There was never any doubt when he stepped up to calmly place the spot kick into the top corner.

The home side were certainly the better of the two teams and could have been left kicking themselves for wasting several opportunities. Daniel Nti met a low cross from Kosylo with a clever back heel but failed to put another power and his effort was collected by Tyrell Belford in the Nuneaton goal.

Richard Peniket was then guilty of putting a glorious chance over the bar when Roberts rushed forward to blast a rapid cross towards the back post but the former Welsh under-21 international nodded just over the bar.

Nuneaton rarely threatened but did come incredibly close to wiping Halifax’s clean sheet out. Greg Mills found himself free in the box after some good work from former Shayman Joe Ironside and lashed and fired a well struck shot which looked destined to find the top corner. However, Sam Johnson managed to produce a wonderful save to deny the midfielder. The save even prompted Mills to shake the goalkeepers hand as a mark of appreciation.

Again, Heath’s side had several chances in the second half to put the game beyond all doubt and Morgan thought he had done just that with what would have been a contender for goal of the season. The former Curzon Ashton star rose to meet a Scott Garner flick on with a sumptuous overhead kick and the home crowd erupted. Unfortunately, the linesman had flagged for offside and the celebrations were cut short.

The result makes it five wins and one draw in the last six games for Halifax. Sensational form for The Shaymen as they battle for a play-off spot. Heath’s men now find themselves in fifth place and just two points behind third placed Salford City with a game in hand.

At the MBi Shay stadium it ended FC Halifax Town 2-0 Nuneaton Town.
